Madeline "Mickey" Haller, a native of Mound, Minnesota and a 1983 graduate of Phillips University, will begin her ninth season as head coach of the women's basketball team. In her eight years, she has led the Gusties to a 153-61 record, and an 128-44 mark in the MIAC. Her overall winning percentage (.715) is the best in the history of the program and is the all-time winningest women's basketball coach at Gustavus.

Last year's team went 18-10 and placed third in the MIAC with a conference record of 16-6. The Gusties defeated Hamline in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs and lost to St. Thomas in the MIAC semifinal. Nonetheless, the Gusties received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, but lost to Simpson in the first round. In 2003, Haller guided Gustavus to a share of its first-ever conference championship and an NCAA tournament berth as the Gusties compiled a record 25-4, shattering the old record for wins in a season by five.

Haller has been named the MIAC Coach of the Year three times in the past seven years, including 2002, 2003, and 2006. She has worked with five players who were all-conference honorees 13 times, two league scoring champions, one MIAC Player of the Year, and two All-Americans. In addition, Haller has coached two Jostens' Award Finalists, which recognize the top Division III women's basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement.

Haller began her coaching career as the assistant girls' basketball coach at Mound Westonka High School from 1983 to 1989. She then took over the head girls' volleyball and head girls' basketball coaching duties at Mound Westonka from 1990 until 1994. In the fall of 1994, Haller accepted the position as head women's basketball coach and assistant women's volleyball coach at Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, where she stayed until 1997.

During her years at Crown, Haller led the women's basketball team to the Northern Athletic Conference title and a sixth place finish at the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament in 1997. She also led the volleyball team to a third place finish at the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and was named the NCCAA district Coach of the Year in basketball in 1995 and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in volleyball in 1996.

After her stint at Crown, Haller came to Gustavus in 1998 as the assistant women's basketball coach. She took over at the head of the program in 2000. In addition to her basketball responsibilities, Haller is also the assistant volleyball coach and the senior women's administrator in the athletic department.

Haller resides in Independence, Minnesota, with her husband, John, and three children, Nicolas, Nathan, and Sydney.
