Harlow Shapley Lectures at Gustavus Adolphus College

ST. PETER, Minn. (April 14, 2000) – Jean-Pierre Caillault, professor of astronomy at the University of Georgia, will present two public lectures at Gustavus Adolphus College as the annual Harlow Shapley visiting scholar.

Caillault, who specializes in stellar x-ray astronomy, star forming regions, young clusters, and extraterrestrial life, will deliver the lecture "Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Are We Alone?" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27 in F.W. Olin Hall 103. At 9 a.m. Friday, April 28 in Olin Hall 103, Caillault will present "Cosmological Anti-Gravity?"

The lectures, which are free and open to the public, are sponsored by the American Astronomical Society and the Gustavus physics department.

A member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union, Caillault received a B.A. in astrophysics, an M.A. in astronomy, and a Ph.D. in astronomy, all from Columbia University.

The Harlow Shapley Visiting Lectureships in Astronomy is named in honor of the astronomer who helped launch the program. Shapley was known nationally and internationally as he played a major role in the founding of UNESCO. He also was very active in the affairs of the International Astronomical Union. He was president of the American Astronomical Society from 1943-46.

Gustavus is a residential, liberal arts college that grants undergraduate degrees in 65 majors. Fully accredited and well known for its strong writing, science, music, athletic, and service-learning programs, Gustavus hosts a local chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and is internationally recognized for its annual Nobel Conference.
