Patty Lindell to receive an honorary degree
from Gustavus Adolphus College
ST. PETER, Minn. (May 16, 2003) – At 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, Patricia
"Patty" Lindell of Edina, Minn., will receive an honorary degree (doctor
of humane letters) from Gustavus Adolphus College. She will join 588 Gustavus
seniors who will receive bachelor of arts degrees during commencement exercises
on Hollingsworth Field (Lund Center for Physical Education and Health if
inclement weather).
Lindell will be presented with the degree in part because of her role
in founding the Gustavus Library Associates. Established in 1977, the Gustavus
Library Associates is a support organization dedicated to raising funds
for the college library, the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. Since its
founding, "GLA" has helped raise nearly $6 million for the library's endowment
and also provides annual support. In addition, Lindell has been active
in many arts and Scandinavian-American organizations. She has served on
the boards and chaired various fundraising efforts at the Guthrie Theatre
and the American Swedish Institute, among others.
A former college dance professor, Patty is married to Edward Lindell,
Gustavus Adolphus College president from 1975-1980.
Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts
college in St. Peter, Minn., that prepares 2,500 undergraduates for lives
of leadership, service, and lifelong learning. The oldest Lutheran college
in Minnesota, Gustavus was founded in 1862 by Swedish immigrants and named

attention in small-sized classes and engage in collaborative research with
their professors. Fully accredited and known for its strong science, writing,
music, athletics, study-abroad, and service-learning programs, Gustavus
hosts a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and is internationally recognized for
its annual Nobel Conference.
