Dr. Jennifer West, who is internationally recognized for cutting-edge research in two of bioengineering’s most competitive fields, nanotechnology and tissue engineering, will be the keynote speaker at the Nobel Conference Preview Dinner. Kicking off the 42nd annual Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College, she will be speaking to an invited Twin Cities audience at the Science Museum of Minnesota on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006.

West, a leader in the effective use of nanotechnology in cancer control, serves as director of Rice University’s Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering in Houston, Texas. Her presentation “Nanomedicine: Prospects for the Future” will give a taste of what attendees can expect from the two-day conference scheduled for Oct. 3 and 4, 2006. This year’s conference will celebrate the successes of modern medicine and provide lecture and question-and-answer sessions to allow attendees to consider how it may further enrich lives. A number of public policy and medical care delivery challenges resulting from these advances will be examined.

College President Jim Peterson said, “We’re honored to have this award-winning research scientist speak at our dinner to a select Twin Cities audience. Dr. West’s work in nanotechnology is forging dramatic change in cancer therapy, drug delivery, and medical testing.”

For 41 years, Gustavus has organized and hosted the Nobel Conference, which draws 5,000 to 6,000 people to the Gustavus campus in St. Peter, Minn., and links a general audience, including high school students and teachers, with the world’s foremost scholars and researchers in debate centered on contemporary issues relating to the natural and social sciences.
