The flu (influenza) is a highly contagious viral respiratory infection that is spread from person to person primarily when an infected person coughs or sneezes. After a person is infected with the virus, symptoms usually appear in 2-4 days. The symptoms include fever, chills, headache, dry cough, congestion, and muscle aches. Unlike the common cold, influenza can cause extreme fatigue lasting several days to more than a week.
PREVENTION IS KEY
- Get an annual flu shot.
- Wash hands FREQUENTLY! Use soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
- Cover your cough! Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your sleeve (not your hand).
- Avoid sharing food, drinks, water bottles, or personal items with others.
- Have tissues readily available.
