Mark Hanson
Mark Hanson is entering his 19th season at the head of the Gustavus men's basketball program. During that time, Hanson has directed the team to 10 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season.
Last season, Hanson coached the Gusties to a 19-8 overall record and finished second in the MIAC with a conference record of 14-6. The squad defeated Carleton in a thrilling victory of the MIAC Playoff semifinals before falling to St. Thomas in the championship game.
Hanson, who has compiled a 358-139 overall record at Gustavus, including a 268-92 record in the MIAC, has won six MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year seven times. He has helped guide Gustavus to the MIAC Playoffs 15 times, reaching the finals eleven times and winning the MIAC Playoff Championship seven times. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 22 players who have garnered 41 all-conference honors, three MIAC Players of the Year, seven players who have received 12 all-region honors, and two All-Americans. In addition, Hanson has coached one Jostens' Award Finalist (Trevor Wittwer, 2008), which recognizes the top Division III men's bastketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement.
Hanson is a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program's all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All-America and GTE Academic All-America selection, a three-time Gustie MVP and a four-time all-MIAC selection.
A long-time outdoor enthusiast, Hanson earned his master’s degree in experiential education at Mankato State University and teaches outdoor education classes in the health and exercise science department. He is also the outdoor program director at the college.
Hanson, a native of Dodge Center, Minnesota, is married to Deb Johnson. Mark and Deb have two children, Hans and Annika, and live in St. Peter.
Josh Drinkall, Assistant Coach
Josh Drinkall begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Gustie basketball program. Prior to coming to Gustavus, he worked as an assistant coach for six seasons at Winona State University. At Winona State, Drinkall helped lead the Warriors to the 2006 Divison II National Championship, a second place finish in the 2007 Division II National Tournament, a Division II record 57- game winning streak, two conference tournament championships, and two conference championships.
Drinkall earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Winona State University in 2003 and received his master's degree in educational leadership from Winona State University in 2006. A native of Rushford, Minn. and graduate of Rushford-Peterson High School, Drinkall was an all-conference selection in football, basketball, and baseball. He was team captain in baseball and basketball and earned spots on the 1997 Winona Daily News All-Area football team and the All-Area Rochester Post Bulletin football team. Drinkall played football two seasons and was a team captain at Rochester Community and Technical College. He was also a member of the Winona State football team in 2000.
Coach Drinkall, who also serves as assistant director for intramurals at Gustavus, lives in St. Peter.
