Van Sickle Named To Men's Basketball All-Conference Team, Johnson Named To All-Rookie Team

Junior Jesse Van Sickle is an All-MIAC pick in 2009.

Gustavus Adolphus men's basketball player Jesse Van Sickle (Jr., Garden City, Minn./LCWM) has been named All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by a vote of the league's coaches. Bobby Johnson (Fy., Edina, Minn.) was named to the All-Rookie Team, while juniors Ryan McPartland (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and Sam Paulson (Waseca, Minn.) received honorable mention.

    The St. Thomas defensive pressure proved to be too much for the Gustavus men's basketball team as the Gusties saw their season coming to an end after a disappointing 90-50 loss in the MIAC semifinals on Wednesday in St. Paul. Gustavus was unable to generate an offensive rhythm as it committed 21 turnovers resulting in 34 Tommie points. Robert Schmidt was the only Gustie to reach double-figures with 13 points as four other players chipped in six points each.

    The No. 6 seed Gustavus men's basketball team will face No. 1 seed St. Thomas in the MIAC semifinals on Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the conference championship game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed. Gustavus enters the contest at 13-13, while St. Thomas is undefeated at 25-0.

    The Gustavus men's basketball team outscored Saint John's 8-0 in the last 3:43 to pull out a 71-68 come-from-behind victory in the first round of the MIAC playoffs on Monday night in Collegeville. The Gustie offense hit 57 percent of its shots from the floor, but it was the defense down the stretch that proved to be the difference in the contest. Gustavus, which improved to 13-13 overall, earned the right to face St. Thomas in the semifinal round on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
  • Men's Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale 71-60 At Saint John's
    The Gustavus men's basketball team's offensive woes continued on Saturday as the Gusties fell to Saint John's 71-60 in Collegeville in the final game of the regular season. The Gusties managed just 22 points in the first half and trailed by 13 at halftime. Sam Paulson recorded his first double-double of the season and second of his career with a game-high 17 points and 13 boards. Gustavus dropped to 12-13 overall and 11-9 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies improved to 14-11 overall and 12-8 in the league.
